How long does it take a nurse or midwife to be licensed / registered in Bermuda?

Upon receipt of completed application form including all documents required, registration is within 4-6 weeks. Registration is by endorsement.

What is endorsement?

Endorsement is the granting of a nursing or midwifery license to a nurse /midwife who holds an active license/registration in another jurisdiction and has passed a licensing examination by a national certification board, recognized by Bermuda Nursing and MIdwifery council and in addition has met registration requirements stated in the application..

Initial License/Registration- Must all documents submitted be notarized?

Documents to be notarised are indicated on application form and or Instructions for application. Must be a Notary Public/ Commissioner of Oaths Justice of the Peace not accepted.

What is the process to be registered as a Nursing Associate? Do I need to do a Nursing Assistant cou

Submit all required documents. Yes a Nursing Assistant, LPN or Health Care course recognized or approved by Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council. Application. How long does it take to be registered as a Nursing Associate?

Upon receipt of completed application forms and providing all requirements are met, the process is same day.

What is CEU

Contact education hour /unit/ continuing Professional Development- means time spent in organized learning in either clinical or instructional setting and is delivered by an organization or professional recognized by Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council. (BNMC)

Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) – can one use College Courses for CEU?

Yes, hours may be applied for completion of credit courses in nursing or midwifery at a recognized (by BNMC) /accredited institution of higher learning. 1 (one) credit hour per semester converts to 15 (fifteen) contact hours.

Why is the fee structure subject to change?

Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council is a Government statutory Council and the Fees are set and reviewed by Cabinet from time to time.

Is a nurse required to pay for each registration category?

Initial registration for Advanced Practice Nurse, Psychiatric, General Nurse Specialist Nurse and or Midwife will be required to pay initial registration fee for each license category, thereafter one fee for renewal. Registration number for individual license category will apply. If you are already registered as a RN in Bermuda and upgrading to a Specialist Nurse or APN, or RN acquiring RMN, or Midwife acquiring nurse qualification, you are required to submit a copy of proof of your recently acquired qualification, and copy of license (by examination) from the jurisdiction. You will be charged registration fee for the category and you will receive a registration number based on the category. For renewal of registration one fee will apply.

Do I need malpractice Insurance to practice nursing?

At this time no. It is recommended.

Why do I need TOEFL or IELTS or MELAB?

Where English is your second language then you are required to provide evidence of successful completion of internationally recognized English proficiency test. TOEFL, IELTS, and MELAB

What is the Passing Score for TOEFL, IELTS, and MELAB?

Nurse/Midwife – Accepted score:- TOEFL Ibt– (Academic) score minimum Overall 84, Speaking 26, Listening 18, Writing 20, Reading 20. IELTS – accepted Score minimum 6 .5; minimum 6 in each band, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. MELAB – accepted score 78-81. Nursing Associates: Accepted Score:- TOEFL Ibt– (Academic) score minimum Overall 74, Speaking 23, Listening 17, Writing 17, Reading 17. IELTS – minimum will be assessed by BNMC. MELAB 73-75.

Who is eligible for a BNMC Scholarship award and how do I apply?

Bermudian student nurse and or midwifery student, or nurse/midwife pursuing further nursing/midwifery education. Information is available on this web site (student Award) or from the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s office.
