Function and Responsibilities

  • Advises the Minister of Health on matters relating to nursing and midwifery.
  • Regulation- Issuing and renewing of licenses/registration
    • Issues license to registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse, Nurse Specialist, Psychiatric / Mental Health Nurse, Midwife , Enrolled Nurse and Nursing Associate. Nurse’s and midwife’s licensing/registration is by endorsement and must meet BNMC’s requirements as set out in application form. NB (Enrolled Nurse is a closed category and no further additions are made to this register).
    • Renewal of registration /License must be carried out every two years. Nurses including enrolled nurses, midwives and Nursing Associates must meet requirements as stated in Re- registration Instructions.
    • Provides Verification of nurse’s license.
  • Sets standards of practice for nurses, midwives  and nursing associates.
  • Approves nursing education & nursing assistant program at Bermuda College.
  • Awards financial assistance to nursing or midwifery students or qualified nurses or midwives who are furthering their education.
  • Handling complaints and conducts hearings.
  • Takes disciplinary action when necessary. Disciplinary action depends on the nature and severity of the violation. BNMC Supports intervention programs as an alternative to discipline for nurses and nursing associates whose practice may be impaired due to chemical dependency or mental illness.
