Registration and Renewals

In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Act 1997, Nurses, Midwives and Nursing Associates practicing in Bermuda must be registered with Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Council (BNMC). Applicants must submit a completed application form and all required documents to BNMC’s office. Renewal /re-registration is required every two (2) years.

It is an offense to practice as a nurse /midwife /nursing associate without a current Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery council registration. Bermuda Nursing and Midwifery Act Section 8A (1) A person who contravenes subsection (1) is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $3,000 dollars.

Nurse refers to Registered Nurse (RN), Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), Nurse Specialist and Psychiatric Nurse (RMN) – registration is by endorsement.

Initial Application

  • Applicant must have graduated from an approved or accredited nursing education program that is recognized by BNMC and holds an active license or registration obtained by examination in the respective category of nursing.
  • In addition APN & Nurse Specialist must hold a Masters degree or higher in nursing, and is certified (by examination) by a national credentialing board/council.
  • APN have prescriptive authority and may only prescribe drugs on the authorization of a Bermuda registered medical practitioner. APN may prescribe drugs that are listed in the Third or Fourth Schedule of the Pharmacy and Poisons Act 1979, Amendment Act 2013.

Midwife

  • Applicant must have graduated from an accredited midwifery education program that is duly recognized by (BNMC) and holds an active license or registration obtained by examination conducted by a national certifying body.

Renewal/Re-registration

  • Nurses (APN, Nurse Specialist, RN, RMN) and Midwives who wish to maintain their registration / license must renew their registration/license every two (2) years.
  • Must submit completed renewal form and meet requirements.

Nursing Associate

Nursing Associates include certified Nursing Assistants Certified Geriatric Aides & Orderlies (prior to 2008 grandfathered – may be eligible to entered in register) and certificate holders of a Health Care course approved by BNMC.

Initial Application

  • Applicant must have graduated from an approved or accredited nursing assistant /health care education program that is recognized by BNMC and certificate obtained by examination.
  • Applicant must submit completed application form and required documents to BNMC office.

Renewal/Re-registration

  • Nursing Associate who wish to maintain his/her registration / license must renew his/her registration/license every two (2) years.
  • Must submit completed renewal form and meet all renewal requirements- see Instructions for Renewal.

Enrolled Nurse

For purposes of the Nursing and Midwifery Act 1997, Enrolled Nurses who were on the register prior to 1997 are categorized under Nursing Associates and they have a defined scope of practice. This is a closed category and only a person who was on the register prior to 1997 is permitted to practice as an Enrolled Nurse.
